I’d never heard of a nuckelavee until a friend of mine mentioned one to me. It’s a sea monster from the mythology of the Orkney Islands that is essentially a fused man and horse (different to a centaur). I had been pondering drawing one when I saw a picture of mudflats and just imagined a nuckelavee trudging across it. The notion of it dragging a body while pursued by seagulls came from watching a tractor from the train.
